A freezing rain warning remains in effect for the Ottawa area, with rain and snow expected after it ends.

Snow and ice pellets began Monday morning, starting to turn into freezing rain around noon in parts of eastern Ontario and western Quebec.

The freezing rain is expected to move through the area throughout the afternoon before turning to rain, according to Environment Canada. Colder air should then turn the precipitation back to snow overnight.

Pedestrians and drivers are asked to be extra cautious on sidewalks and roads.

The warning stretches roughly from Kingston to upper Gatineau, including the Cornwall and Pembroke areas.

School bus cancellations

Ottawa school buses did run on Monday, but outside the city many bus routes were cancelled.

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario buses, which serves the Upper Canada District School Board and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, cancelled all of its buses for Monday, though schools remain open.

All buses for Renfrew schools with the exception of Whitney schools were also stalled by the weather, according to the Renfrew County Joint Transportation Consortium.

The Consortium de transport scolaire d'Ottawa, which serves Catholic and public French schools, said bus transportation was cancelled for:

• St. Teresa of Avila in Marionville.
• Jeanne-Lajoie and Equinox in Pembroke.
• JL Couroux in Carleton Place.
• Ste-Marguerite-Bourgeoys in Merrickville
• Ange-Gabriel in Brockville.

Buses in those boards ran normally in Ottawa, Kingston and Trenton.

Western Quebec School Board buses also ran in the Outaouais and Pontiac regions.
