One woman is dead and one man is in critical condition after an overnight house fire in the Carlington area of Ottawa Saturday night.
Emergency responders received reports of heavy smoke and flames coming out of a single family house located at 1140 Shillington Avenue just before 10 p.m.
Two men in their 50s were outside the home when firefighters and paramedics arrived.
Both had suffered smoke inhalation and one had second degree burns to his face. They were both transported to hospital and are in serious condition. The man who suffered burns is in critical condition in hospital.
Witnesses told firefighters the two men had been in the basement and came upstairs when they discovered the fire. One man went outside while the other searched inside for his mother.
While attempting to pull her out, he lost hold of her, became disoriented in the smoke, and left the building.
He attempted to go back inside but was held back by neighbours, firefighters said.
Victim identified as Shirley Goyette
A woman in her 80s was later found in the home but was not transported to hospital. She was later pronounced dead.
Family members identified her as Shirley Goyette and the man in critical condition as her son, James Goyette.
The fire started on the main level and spread to the attic. It was contained at about 10:39 p.m.
Damage to the home was estimated at $400,000.
Ottawa police and the Ontario Fire Marshall are investigating the fire.
