Police have officially charged an 18-year-old man who accidentally shot his girlfriend in the arm in Richmond, just south of Ottawa.
The Ottawa man faces three firearm-related charges after police said, on Thursday evening, he was handling a rifle when he shot his 18-year-old girlfriend's left arm in a home on Twin Elm Road, between Old Richmond Road and Brophy Drive.
The man appeared in court Friday on the charges of careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm with knowing no authority.
Sgt. Ken Bryden of the guns and gangs unit told CBC News it appeared the man did not know the rifle was loaded.
The people living in the house took the victim to the Queensway Carleton Hospital and she was released later Thursday night. Her injuries were not considered serious.
The man was arrested at the hospital.
Two long guns were also seized by police from the home on Twin Elm Rd. Police also executed a search warrant at the home to retrieve the bullet.
