The province’s Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Russell County police officer of any wrongdoing after he closed a cell door that crushed a female inmate's finger.

The woman, 30, from Clarence-Rockland suffered a fracture to her finger due to the incident at the Rockland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, east of Ottawa.

The investigation found she was covering the closed circuit camera with toilet paper in her cell.

Officers decided to remove the toilet paper, the investigation also found, but the woman found other paper to cover the camera.

Later, an officer left the cell and closed the door but the woman's baby finger on her right hand got caught and began to bleed, according to the SIU. The officer then put a bandage on the finger.

Paramedics were called and the woman was taken to the Montfort Hospital.

"There is no suggestion that he [the officer] was aware that the prisoner might place her hand on either the cell door or door frame in a manner that would cause this injury," said Ian Scott, director of the SIU, in a statement.

There were two SIU investigators and one forensic investigator on this case. There were also four witness officers and one civilian witness interviewed.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
