A family of six people is now homeless after a kitchen fire caused damage to an east Ottawa rowhouse.
The blaze was first reported just before noon Sunday at 1210 Orleans Boulevard. Flames were spotted coming from the middle unit of a multi-door residential rowhouse complex.
Firefighters tackled the fire, which began in the first floor kitchen, and knocked it down about half an hour after it was first reported.
There were no injuries as nobody was home at the time of the fire, but the family had been in the midst of moving into the house.
Ottawa Fire Services spokesman Marc Messier said they had started last night and furniture was delivered Sunday morning.
Police had closed Orleans Blvd. between Jeanne D'Arc Boulevard and Fortune Drive for a couple of hours but it reopened Sunday afternoon.
The total damage is estimated at $250,000 with most of the damage on the main floors, as well as some damage on the upper level and extensive smoke damage throughout the house.
The exact cause remains under investigation.
