An Ottawa woman injured in a roadside collision in Uganda last week has died. Agnes Zabali came to Canada from Uganda as a refugee and was returning to attend a memorial for her mother. (Facebook)

Agnes Zabali, 53, was hit by a garbage truck on Dec. 19 while waiting with her son on the roadside in the Ugandan capital of Kampala.

Both her legs were crushed and later amputated in hospital after the collision. She died Thursday morning at 9 a.m. ET after she was taken off life support.

Zabali worked in finance for the Department of Justice and was returning to the Ugandan village of Kamengo where she was born to volunteer with the Canada-Africa Community Healthcare Alliance where her son Jimmy Sebulime worked.

Sebulime, 34, was also hit and critically injured and remains in hospital with serious head injuries. Jimmy Sebulime remains in hospital after he and his mother were hit by a garbage truck in Uganada last week. (CACHA)

The alliance's founder, Dr. Don Kilby, confirmed Zabali's death and said Sebulime is now out of a coma and has had facial reconstruction surgery. Sebulime is devastated by his mother's death, Kilby said.

Zabali had come to Canada about 30 years ago as a refugee and was returning to Uganda with four family members to attend her mother's memorial in a village outside the city, said Kilby.

She had also planned to volunteer for the healthcare alliance where she previously taught elementary school children, cooked for the organization's staff and was known by the village's children as "Auntie Agnes"

The CACHA has started a trust fund for the family and has so far raised $40,000.

Zabali is survived by her husband, three sons, a daughter, two grandchildren and an extended family in Ottawa of nearly 50 members.
