A woman escaped with minor injuries after her vehicle went through a sound barrier on Highway 417 westbound and came to rest in a resident's backyard.

The crash happened just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when paramedics, firefighters and Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene on Helena Street, just next to the Queensway.

Fire services spokesman Marc Messier said firefighter backup was called off meaning the driver was able to get out of the vehicle herself.

The CBC's Ryan Gibson said the Volkswagen Jetta's airbags were deployed and the rear windshield was smashed from the crash, which happened in the Hampton Park area.

The homeowner, Abe Khouri, said he was not surprised with a vehicle flying into his backyard.

"It's happened in previous years. My garage had to be rebuilt because of it," Khouri said.

"I'm just thankful that nobody was hurt and it didn't actually come into the house. I'm quite surprised because there isn't a cement barrier along this stretch of the Queensway to prevent this sort of thing from happening."

The driver was walking around after the crash and police said her injuries were minor. The vehicle has been towed away.

OPP are investigating.
