Mechanic commended for administering first aid to injured worker, paramedics say

Two workers are recovering in hospital after suffering serious injuries in two mishaps at separate work sites in downtown Ottawa.
A 58-year-old man is recovering in hospital after he suffered a large cut to his wrist while working about 60 metres up in a crane in the area of Elgin Street and Laurier Avenue West just after 1 p.m. Tuesday.
The man was atop his crane when he cut his wrist while trying to open a grease tube, paramedics said. A mechanic, also atop the crane, performed first aid and helped the injured worker to ground level. Paramedics are commending his actions.
The victim suffered a serious arterial bleed from the cut, but he is in stable condition in hospital.
Man regains consciousness
Two hours later, paramedics responded to the 300 block of Sussex Drive where a 57-year-old man suffered serious head injuries after a block of cement fell on his head.
The worker, who was wearing a hard hat, lost consciousness and he was treated for a concussion, a collarbone fracture, a broken arm and cuts to his face.
The man regained consciousness before he arrived at hospital and he is in serious but stable condition in hospital.
The Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating the injury to the crane worker and it is aware of the injury to the worker on Sussex.
