Former Kitchissippi councillor Shawn Little has died at the age of 48, Coun. Diane Deans has told CBC News.
Shawn Little, seen here in a campaign video for the 2010 election, was Kitchissippi's councillor for nine years. (CBC)Little represented Kitchissippi Ward in 1997 and served on council for nine years.
His two terms were steeped in controversy, including when he was accused of overspending in the 2002 election and charged under the Municipal Election Act. The charges were eventually dismissed.
Little last ran for public office in 2010 when he ran against incumbent Alex Cullen and eventual winner Mark Taylor in Bay Ward. He placed fifth.
Deans said Little died while in Cuba from a heart problem. She also said police informed his father of the death Sunday night. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has also offered his condolences to Little's father.
In a statement, Watson also said city council will hold a moment of silence Wednesday and flags at city hall will fly at half mast.
"I had the honour of serving with Shawn during his first term on city council from 1997-2000," Watson wrote. "I want to offer my condolences to Shawn's family at this difficult time."
