One-time mayor of Hull and former National Capital Commission Chairman Marcel Beaudry has died.

The popular Beaudry was elected mayor of Hull in 1991, but served only nine months before he was named NCC chair by then-Prime Minister Brian Mulroney

Beaudry held the commission's top job from 1992 to 2006 and was asked to carry on in the role by Mulroney's successor, Jean Chrétien.

Beaudry's legacy is a more transparent NCC as well as presiding over landmark projects including the Champlain Bridge renovation and new Canadian War Museum.

He is also credited with maneuvering the capital commission through controversy surrounding the locations of both the new U.S. embassy on Sussex Drive, and the Casino du Lac Leamy.

Marcel Beaudry was 79.
