A 68-year-old man from Laval, Que., is dead after the sedan he was driving struck a moose on Highway 417 on Wednesday. (CBC)

An 68-year-old man was killed Wednesday after a sedan he was driving struck a 450-kilogram moose on Highway 417 between the Walkley and Anderson road exits.

Ontario Provincial Police, paramedics, firefighters and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation all responded to the crash at about 6:44 p.m.

Fire services spokesman Marc Messier said the vehicle was heading west when it struck the moose and rolled several times into the median. The driver and one passenger were trapped in the vehicle, which ended up on its roof after the impact.

Firefighters had to remove the entire driver's side of the vehicle to extricate the passengers. They found the driver unconscious and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim, from Laval, Que., has been identified by OPP as 68-year-old Mounir Hamaoui.

The passenger, a 20-year-old man from Ottawa, was conscious when he was removed from the vehicle. Paramedics treated and transported him to hospital with potential spinal injuries.

He was in serious but stable condition in hospital.

The moose was also killed in the crash and remained in the middle of the highway for a time, Messier said. The highway remained open, though, and traffic was re-routed onto the shoulder.

OPP are investigating the crash and they are asking anyone who might have information about the crash to call 613-270-9171.
