A carjacking suspect who allegedly assaulted a woman at knifepoint is a visitor from outside Canada, police say.
The man faces numerous charges after a woman was pulled from her vehicle Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Walkley and Conroy roads.
Police said a man was trying to open the doors of cars stopped at the intersection. He then found the victim's car unlocked.
Police arrested the man for an unrelated incident a short time later at St. Laurent Shopping Centre. Police believe he’s responsible for the carjacking and two shoplifting incidents at the St. Laurent mall.
The stolen car was recovered after the arrest at the mall, police said.
Police are now working with Canada Border Services Agency in relation to the charges, which include robbery with an offensive weapon, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, two counts of theft under $5,000, obstructing police and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.
The man appeared in court Tuesday.
Anyone with information about the carjacking is asked to call Ottawa police at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
