The city's transportation committee is asking staff to conduct a safety review of Bronson Avenue, less than a month after a cyclist was killed while riding on the road.

Carleton University student Krista Johnson, 27, was struck by a car and killed on Bronson just south of Holmwood Avenue in October.

Her boyfriend told CBC News she was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but he did not know if she had reflectors in the bicycle or a light.

It is not known if speed was a factor in the crash.

Coun. David Chernushenko said he does believe speed is a problem in the area, whether it factored in the death or not.

He asked the committee to consider lowering speed limits between Holmwood and Brewer Way to 50 kilometres per hour. The current speed limit for that stretch of road is 60 kilometres per hour.

Instead, the committee decided to direct staff to conduct a "comprehensive" review of safety on Bronson and report back to the committee in March 2013.

"I hope we won't regret having delayed a speed limit reduction," said Chernushenko.

The councillor also said he would ask police to boost their enforcement of the current speed limit on Bronson until the study is completed.
