The co-owner of a bar in Gatineau's Hull sector says she's personally sorry after a group of people claimed a bouncer refused to let them in because they were black.

A cellphone video posted on Facebook appears to show a bouncer at Le Fou du Roi RestoBar refusing entry to a group of black people.

The bouncer can be heard telling them, in French, that he had an order to refuse entry to black people who were not regulars at the bar.

Officers were called to the scene on Oct. 20 at about 1:40 a.m. regarding that exchange, Gatineau police spokesman Const. Pierre Lanthier confirmed.

'It's a very devastating situation,' bar co-owner says

The bar's co-owner, Brigit Vanhoutte, said Friday that the doorman in question has been suspended until further notice, and that the bar doesn't ban black customers. She said the bar lets inside anyone who respects the rules.

"It's a very devastating situation," she said. "I am personally very sorry for that kind of comment that came out. It does not reflect at all our beliefs here at Le Fou du Roi."

Vanhoutte also said she'll be speaking with staff to make sure "it will not happen ever again."

Lanthier said police are not investigating, and that it could be dealt with through a human rights complaint.

Gatineau Coun. Mireille Apollon said Gatineau is an inclusive city and that it would be unacceptable for anyone to be excluded from a bar because of the colour of their skin.
