An Ottawa shelter for women and children escaping abusive households will reopen thanks to new leadership.

Nelson House, which holds 15 beds, first suspended staff without pay in May and shut its doors after the board of directors said the shelter did not have the resources it needed to care for clients.

The board also said close to 100 per cent of its budget was going to wages and the shelter was not "financially viable."

The seven women and children who used the shelter then had to be moved.

But now a new board of directors and executive director say they have solved the financial problems.

Previous staff members are returning and new referrals will be accepted starting Oct. 29.
