2 crashes send 5 to hospital early Saturday

Two crashes in the Ottawa area sent five people to hospital early Saturday morning.
Just before 1 a.m., the driver of a pickup truck fell asleep at the wheel on Highway 307 in Val-des-Monts, near St-Pierre-de-Wakefield, Que.
Only one vehicle was involved, said MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais police. The truck crossed the road twice before slamming into a ditch.
The 34-year-old man from Hearst, Ont., was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.
Police said speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
The second crash, involving two vehicles, happened on Highway 416 south of Roger Stevens Drive at about 2:30 a.m.
Paramedics from Ottawa and Leeds-Grenville treated eight patients: seven from a vehicle that flipped on the road, and one from the other vehicle.
Four men, between 41 and 67 years old, were taken to hospital. All four were from the overturned vehicle.
Two were listed in serious but stable condition, while the two others with in stable condition. All of the victims complained of back, hip or leg pain.
Ontario Provincial Police are investigating.
