The memorial for slain Gatineau student Valerie Leblanc has been vandalized.

The body of Leblanc, 18, was found burned and with severe head trauma on Aug. 23, 2011, in a forest near CEGEP de l'Outaouais in the Hull sector of Gatineau.

Earlier this summer, on the anniversary of her death, her family set up a memorial at the site where her body was found, placing a granite plaque dedicated to her as well as flowers, pictures, a crucifix, a cross, and other personal items.

Gatineau police said the granite plaque has been damaged, and several other items at the memorial were also damaged.

Beer cans found at scene

Leblanc's grandmother, Huguette Leblanc, said her husband made the discovery at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Beer cans were also found at the scene.

Police said they were investigating whether the people who consumed the beer are connected to the vandalism.

Police said it would be premature to speculate as to whether there was any connection to the vandalism and the murder of Leblanc.

Gatineau police still have no prime suspect or witness in the year-old case. A $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the murder of Leblanc is still in effect.
