Firefighters rescued two parakeets from a house fire on Forbes Avenue but they were unable to save the third after a Kanata house fire that displaced three people.
The fire broke out just before noon Sunday inside a single-family home at 8 Forbes Ave., near Castlefrank Road and McCurdy Drive.
The flames were brought under control at about 12:35 p.m. but not before there was extensive smoke damage throughout the home.
A man who went into the basement of the home was assessed by paramedics for smoke inhalation, the fire department said.
No other injuries were reported.
Firefighters managed to rescue two parakeets and the family dog, but a third parakeet died in the fire.
The building and its contents suffered $225,000 in damage, and the two people who lived there — who were hosting a guest at the time — were forced to find somewhere else to stay.
They did not require victim assistance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
