Police are hoping surveillance video obtained from the site of a burned out van helps them identify a suspect in the shooting death of a 22-year-old Ottawa man.

Levy Kasende was shot and killed in the early morning of Aug. 25 outside his ex-girlfriend's social housing unit at 2676 Innes Road. He was visiting his four-month-old daughter at the time of the drive-by shooting.

Witnesses reported multiple shots rang out at about 12:50 a.m. ET.

In the hours following, police found a burned out van in a field in Vars, south of Ottawa. The vehicle's description is similar to one witnesses say sped off after Kasende was shot.

There is no surveillance footage from the social housing complex, but police do now have video from businesses near where the burned out vehicle was abandoned.

The investigation has been a difficult one for police, so far, as most witnesses are not co-operating. Police have said some of Kasende's friends and neighbours are too scared to talk, while others have refused to talk.

Detectives also tell CBC News they know the owner of the burned out vehicle but that person is not saying who took the van. Investigators continue to search for more witnesses.

Major crimes investigators characterize Kasende's death — the city's fifth homicide this year — as gang-related. They said while Kasende was not a known gang member, some of his friends were.
