A co-founder of the Escapade Music Festival accused of stealing proceeds from the festival's ticket and liquor sales on the Canada Day weekend appeared in an Ottawa courtroom Friday.
Nickolas Guindon-Vachon was arrested in the small island nation of Aruba earlier this month. (Facebook)Nickolas Guindon-Vachon, 26, was formally charged earlier this week with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5,000.
He appeared in court Friday afternoon via a video link from the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre. Wearing an orange jumpsuit, he said little more than his name and "thank you" after his short appearance.
Guindon-Vachon was a partner in DNA Presents, the company that staged the two-day electronic music festival over Canada Day weekend.
Three other DNA partners showed up to watch Guindon-Vachon's brief appearance: Nick Orphanos, Ali Shafee and Aydin Kharaghani.
A bail hearing was scheduled for Aug. 22 at 11 a.m.
Guindon-Vachon was arrested by Aruban police in Oranjestad, Aruba, earlier this month. Ottawa police travelled to Aruba and brought him back to Ottawa Tuesday night.
Michael O'Farrell, another partner with the company, said he and his colleagues discovered the money missing from a vault at the festival's venue, Ottawa Stadium, the day after the festival. Guindon-Vachon disappeared the same day.
Police issued a warrant for Guindon-Vachon's arrest and a rental vehicle he had used was found at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport in Montreal.
