A heat alert has been issued for Ottawa and the surrounding area this weekend as temperatures are set to soar.

Ottawa Public Health as well as the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, issued the alerts Friday as forecasts show temperatures in the region reaching extreme levels.

The health units warn that such conditions can cause dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Although everyone could be at risk, the elderly, those with chronic illness, infants and people involved in strenuous outdoor activity are particularly at risk.

During heat alerts the public is advised to check in on those who may be at a greater health risk and should take the following precautions:

  • Do not leave children or pets in parked cars or sleeping in sunlight.
  • Consult a doctor or pharmacist about the side effects of certain medications.
  • Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • If possible go to air-conditioned rooms or buildings — like malls and libraries.

The health unit advises that anyone experiencing dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, confusion or rapid breathing should seek medical attention right away.
