The boil water advisory for Carp's communal well water system has been lifted, the city announced Wednesday.

A pipe at the well facility burst over the weekend, cutting off water service for about 1,800 people.

Partial service was back up Monday, and by Tuesday, a boil water advisory was issued.

Prior to Wednesday's announcement, the city had been distributing bottled water and non-potable water to be used for sanitary purposes at Carp Fairgrounds.

The city said affected water users should run cold water taps, drinking fountains and garden hoses for one to five minutes to flush them out. Water softeners should be run through a refrigeration cycle, and hot water heaters set below 45 C (the normal setting is 60 C), should be drained and refilled.

Reddish brown or yellow tap water is not harmful, the city said. Water system repairs can disturb sediments that are often present in water main pipes.
