Carp residents have had their water system partially restored but are now under a boil-water advisory until further notice.

The 1,800 residents who rely on Carp's communal well-water system had previously been asked since Sunday not to drink the water — even after boiling it — because of a mechanical failure at the well facility.

But on Tuesday as repairs to the system continued Ottawa Public Health issued the boil-water advisory, saying it can be used as drinking water after it has been brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute.

After boiling, the water should be left to cool before being used, or should be placed in clean containers to cool in a refrigerator, said Ottawa Public Health.

The advisory will be lifted after the municipal health agency can confirm the absense of bacteria in the distribution system's water.

OPH said if residents are unable to boil water, they should drink only bottled water.
