Police in west Quebec are sounding the alarm about a rise in impaired driving charges this year.
MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais said 102 drivers have been arrested in their jurisdiction on impaired driving charges in 2012.
The record number of arrests is 165, they add, which happened in 2010.
Just this past weekend, four people were arrested for suspected impaired driving. Sgt. Dominic Gallant told Radio-Canada police are expecting a record year for arrests.
Gallant added more drivers are being caught first by bystanders who flag police about the erratic driving. Many of the arrests have come after calls to police.
The province of Quebec also enacted new rules on its roads June 30 for repeat offenders of impaired driving or those with high-risk behaviours.
The tougher sanctions include holding someone's vehicle for 90 days, instead of 30, after an arrest for impaired driving.
If a driver were convicted three times in a decade, the driver would be required to install a breathalyzer in their car.
