Window pane falls from Ottawa condo balcony
Incident happens as Ontario proposes tougher building code rules to prevent similar incidents

A window pane shattered and fell from a 10th-storey residential balcony at Bank Street and Laurier Avenue Thursday afternoon, dropping shards of glass on the sidewalk.
Luckily, only one bystander reported an injury from the incident — a small cut to his finger.
The nearby Shopper Drugs Mart provided a free band-aid, and manager Jordon Henry helped sweep up the shattered glass from the sidewalk.
Building staff, meanwhile, attended to more shattered glass on other balconies.
By Thursday morning, no barricades or warning signs had been installed at Bank and Laurier.

(Ryan Paul Gibson/CBC)The incident happened the same day Ontario's housing minister announced new building code rules to help prevent glass panels from breaking off highrise balconies during hot weather.
Kathleen Wynne said the province will require construction companies to install the same kind of heat-resistant glass used in car windshields for outside panels of balconies.
The move comes after a recent spate of incidents that have seen shards of glass rain down from skyscraper balconies in downtown Toronto.
