One woman is dead and five other people were injured in three separate collisions early Saturday morning.

The first crash, a single-vehicle rollover, occurred at the intersection of Rushmore and Eagleson roads at about 12:20 a.m.

Firefighters used the jaws of life to extricate a 37-year-old woman from the vehicle, which took a little more than 10 minutes.

The woman had suffered critical head trauma and vital signs became absent en route to hospital, paramedics said.

She was later pronounced dead at hospital.

Man critical after 2nd single-vehicle rollover

About half an hour later at 1 a.m., emergency crews were called to another single-vehicle rollover south of the Ottawa airport.

A car had rolled over several times into a ditch at Rideau and Limebank roads, coming to rest on its roof.

The lone 34-year-old man in the car also had to be extricated from it. He suffered critical head injuries and leg and arm fractures, and was taken to The Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus trauma unit.

Four injured in 8-vehicle pileup

Then, at 2 a.m., eight vehicles collided on the Vanier Parkway near Queen Mary Street.

Six of the vehicles were "severely" damaged, paramedics said.

Four people were injured:

  • A 24-year-old man suffered abdominal and back injuries, and had to be extricated from a vehicle. He was taken to the trauma unit in stable condition.
  • A 49-year-old man suffered a severe ankle fracture and minor chest injuries. He was also extricated from a vehicle and taken to hospital in stable condition.
  • A 44-year-old woman sustained abdominal injuries and a large cut on her leg. She was also extricated from a vehicle and taken to hospital in stable condition.
  • A 41-year-old woman suffered a large cut on her leg, and was also taken to hospital in stable condition.
