The NCC is studying three corridors for a potential sixth interprovincial bridge. (National Capital Commission)A coalition of east-end Ottawa community groups say all three potential locations for a sixth provincial bridge linking Ottawa to Gatineau are unnecessary and won't solve the issue of truck traffic in Ottawa.
The National Capital Commission's final public consultation for the current phase of its proposed bridge project was Tuesday at the Shenkman Arts Centre.
The NCC is focusing on three locations for a sixth bridge: one at Kettle Island near the Rockcliffe Airport and two farther east at Lower Duck Island and McLaurin Bay that connect with Ottawa in the Orleans area.
But community groups from across east Ottawa have vowed to hold a protest during the consultation, arguing the whole process has been flawed.
"The three options on the table are all bad for many reasons. And we the citizens of the National Capital Region demand something better," said Christophe Credico with the Manor Park Community Association.
Community groups in the Manor Park and Rockcliffe Park communities have fought against the Kettle Island option in the past, and now say none of the options is satisfactory.
Bridge proposed to ease truck traffic at King Edward
"We're talking about a half a billion or more dollars being spent of taxpayer money. For that kind of public expenditure, we just think the NCC has to do more of its own homework. We just don't think there's a justification being made for this bridge," said Lori Assheton-Smith with the Rockcliffe Park Residents Association.
The NCC is hoping a new bridge can reduce truck traffic and congestion on King Edward Avenue and the surrounding areas of downtown Ottawa caused by transport vehicles crossing from Quebec to Ontario via the centrally located MacDonald-Cartier Bridge.
It will cost an estimated $500 million to build.
The current phase of the bridge project is slated to be completed next year, after environmental reviews of the proposed locations is assessed.
In addition to the McDonald-Cartier, Ottawa and Gatineau are also connected by the Alexandra, Portage, Chaudières and Champlain bridges.
