The arrival of hordes of comic-book fans to Ottawa's CE Centre on the weekend shouldn't pose any traffic or parking issues, according to officials with both the convention centre and the city.

Between 25,000 and 30,000 science fiction and comic-book fans are expected to be on hand for Ottawa Comiccon.

That's significantly more people than six months ago when, in the centre's first major event, about 6,000 people looking for a bargain at a Lulu Lemon outlet sale caused traffic chaos outside on Uplands Drive.

But even with the expected volume of people, convention president Kevin McCrann said improvements have been made to alleviate any traffic or parking congestion, including the addition of traffic attendants.

Two different OC Transpo bus routes also now stop at the front door, and extra parking is available at CFB Uplands.

"So if we fill this lot this weekend in a matter of minutes we'll be parking across the street," said McCrann. "We'll have some off duty police officers on the street … so I think we're well prepared."

City officials seem similarly unconcerned.

"There may be short delays at certain times but it should work very well," said councillor Marianne Wilkinson.

Canadian actor William Shatner — best known for his role as Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk — is expected as a guest at the convention, as is another Star Trek franchise icon, actor Brent Spiner (Commander Data). Bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno, known for his role as the Incredible Hulk, is also expected to be in attendance.

"I hope all the comic book heroes and fans can get there and leave safely," said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.
