Gatineau drivers are about to see the speed limit lowered on residential side streets.
City council has decided to change a bylaw that will lower the limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h on side streets starting in 90 days.
One of the main motivations, councillors say, is the lower risk to pedestrians struck by vehicles.
Gatineau Mayor Marc Bureau released a statement that said the proactive measure aims to “help improve everyone’s safety on the roads", including pedestrians and cyclists.
Bureau also said studies show the risk of death to pedestrians falls to 25 per cent when hit by a car at 40km/h.
The risk of death is 90 per cent when struck by a vehicle travelling at speeds of 60 km/h.
There are areas of the city that will see speed limit boosts, though. Zones of Cite-des-Jeunes Bouleveard and Laurier Street that previously had limits of 30 km/h will now have a limit of 50 km/h.
Main Ottawa side streets already have posted speed limits of 40 km/h.
