A funeral was held for an Ottawa-area youth who died after his heart stopped in a minor hockey game Sunday.
Tyler Kerr, 15, of Richmond, Ont., collapsed during a hockey game Sunday evening at the W. Erskine Johnston Arena in Carp, just west of Ottawa, and died hours later.
Kerr wore number 14 while playing Minor Midget B hockey for Richmond in the Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League.
Paramedics arrived and took Kerr to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He was pronounced dead at about 3 a.m. Monday. No foul play was suspected and police said the teen was not injured during the game.
It is still unknown what caused his heart to stop when he was on the bench following a shift. An autopsy has been completed.
Friends and fellow students mourned Kerr at his school, Sacred Heart Catholic High School, on Monday.
A couple hundred attended the funeral, which took place at St. Philip Catholic Church at 127 Burke St. in Richmond.
Donations in Kerr's memory can be made at any local Scotiabank branch.
