The force of the impact on Carling near Kirkwood Avenue threw Anderson a distance of about five metres. Though he was wearing a helmet at the time, Anderson sustained severe head injuries. He remained in a coma in hospital Thursday, surrounded by family. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

Family members told police Anderson is an avid cyclist who doesn't own a car and always wears a helmet.

Witnesses at the scene last Thursday afternoon reported seeing a man stagger into a nearby liquor store, where he was refused service. The man returned to his car and hit at least one parked car in the parking lot.

Police had just come upon the car on Carling when Anderson was hit and witnessed the collision. Carkner was arrested at the scene and given a breathalizer test, which showed that he had no alcohol in his system. He refused to undergo a drug test. Carkner was later charged with impaired driving due to drugs, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, two counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident, two counts of assaulting a peace officer and one count of failing to submit to a drug test.

Carkner was ordered to spend the next 30 days in a residential drug treatment centre.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 27.
