Two 23-year-old women are dead after a vehicle heading in the wrong direction along Highway 401 crashed head-on into another vehicle on Monday morning, Ontario Provincial Police say.
Const. Tammy Coleman said Korin Howes of Belleville, Ont., was heading west in the eastbound lanes near Trenton when she crashed into a vehicle heading in the right direction at about 9:50 a.m.
Howes and Shaina Harrison of Oshawa, Ont., the driver of the second vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in either vehicle.
Before the 9:50 a.m. crash, another woman heading in the right direction was forced to swerve out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, Coleman said. The car slammed into a concrete barrier but the driver was unharmed.
Police looking for answers
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. They're hoping to find out where the red, two-door Hyundai Accent driven by Howes entered the 401, and why.
