Dabene was found beaten under the Prince of Wales train bridge near LeBreton Flats on July 18, 2009. He had suffered severe head injuries and was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Gus Tavares, 49, was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder, a charge later upgraded to second-degree murder when Dabene died.
The judge gave Tavares credit for five years, meaning he'll spend another 10 years in an institution with access to psychiatric care.
Dabene, a father of three, was collecting cans on the morning after a Bluesfest concert when he got into an altercation with Tavares. Dabene, who once worked at a recycling plant, supplemented his income by collecting cans to recycle.
