Outaouais police have arrested on average one impaired driver every two days so far in 2012.

There have been 15 arrests since Jan. 1 on rural western Quebec roads, police said, including three on Friday night and Saturday morning alone.

The first incident this weekend happened around 8:40 p.m. Friday on Highway 105 in Chelsea, Que., when a Val-des-Monts, Que., man, 35, was arrested after losing control of his car.

He went off the road and was charged for impaired driving and possession of cannabis and hashish.

Designated driver arrested

The second incident happened around 2 a.m. Saturday in Val-des-Monts when a 21-year-old Gatineau man was arrested for being drunk behind the wheel. Police say he was actually the designated driver for his friends.

The final incident happened a couple hours later at 4:30 a.m. on Highway 307 in Cantley.

A Gatineau man, 29, was arrested but uncooperative, so police said they used pepper spray to subdue him.

The man also refused to be tested for alcohol at the police station and was detained. He appeared in court on Monday.

He faces charges for impaired driving, resisting arrest, assaulting police officers, obstruction of justice and mischief.

These numbers come after police reported a deadly year on Outaouais roads with 10 crashes killing 16 people in 2011.
