Ottawa police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot to death outside his Barrhaven home Sunday morning.

Eric Vongviset, 34, was found with gunshot wounds just after 1 a.m. Sunday at 58 Charleston Street, near Prince of Wales and Strandherd Drive.

He later died in hospital.

Police said he was the city's 10th homicide victim of the year.

Neighbours in shock over shooting

Neighbours were in disbelief as they gathered at the yellow police tape Sunday. Brian Dandrade said he heard the commotion.

"I heard four bangs after one o'clock, I though it was just backfire. I heard a male voice shouting, I couldn't make out what he was saying ..." said Dandrade.

He went to bed and woke up to a crime scene.

"It's pretty shocking in this neighbourhood, it's a very quiet area. You don't expect that when you wake up on a Sunday morning," he said.

Wajmaya Esmattullah didn't hear the shots but said she was awoken by a police officer at her door.

"We were asking what's going on? Which house is it?" said Esmattullah. "All he said was it's a white male ..."

Catherine Miller, whose property backs onto Vongviset's property, said she saw police and news crews gather right behind her house.

"It's a little unsettling when it's so close," she said.

Vongviset is known to police. In 2000, he was convicted for participating in an arson. In 2002 he was convicted of aggravated assault after a bar fight.
