A Quebec provincial police officer is facing two charges related to drunk driving after an overnight collision on Highway 50 in Gatineau.
The Sûreté du Quebec said just after midnight the car the officer was driving swerved from the left lane and collided with a car in the right lane.
Firefighters needed the jaws of life to rescue the female driver of the other car. She was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition.
The officer's car, an unmarked police vehicle, ended up in a ditch but he was uninjured. Gatineau police administered the alcohol test before arresting him.
He is charged with impaired driving and impaired driving causing injuries, appearing in a Gatineau courtroom Friday afternoon.
"He is obviously stunned by what's happening," said the officer's lawyer Paul Charlebois, "He's also upset about the possibility that a person might be injured."
The judge decided the officer should remain in police custody.
The eastbound lanes of highway 50 were closed between Labrosse to Montée Paiement but reopened mid-day Friday.
