Friends of 22-year-old Dan Miller gathered to remember his life on Thursday, a little more than 24 hours after the Stratford, Ont. man was killed in a hit-and-run in Centretown Ottawa.

Miller, originally from Stratford, Ont., had just returned from his hometown after spending most of the summer there.

He lived with roommate Cody White, who was also involved in Ottawa's punk rock scene.

White said he is going through a wave of emotions including "confusion, anger and sadness."

My soul hurts and my heart hurts," he admitted to CBC News, as he sat on his back deck holding his tears.

Nearby, a small memorial of signs and flowers remembered Miller, who loved to sing punk rock.

"He was a strong guy, too," added White, "he helped me through my mom, I just lost my mom three weeks ago."

Miller died after he was struck at Bronson Avenue and Somerset Street West.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and found him unconscious and lying in the street with multiple injuries, including a major head injury.

He was transported to hospital where he died from his injuries.

Miller's older brother Rob told CBC News Wednesday Dan was the youngest of four children.

"He was very much involved in punk rock culture," said Miller when reached over the phone from his Stratford, Ont. home.

"He adored his friends, he loved his family."

Miller's parents drove to Ottawa Wednesday after hearing about the incident, which is about a six-hour drive.

The family has preached forgiveness, but is hoping the driver of the assailing car comes forward.

"I think it's the right thing to do. If you know you've done something wrong you should confess it," said Rob Miller.

"If not, you're going to be dealing with that guilt forever.

Police said they are looking for the public's assistance in locating or identifying the suspect vehicle, which they describe as a dark Nissan sedan.

The vehicle would have damage to the front end, possibly on the passenger side, police said.

The northbound lane of Bronson was closed off for a few hours Wednesday while officers investigated the scene.
