A young man has been charged with aggravated assault and six other charges after an early morning stabbing Sunday in downtown Ottawa.

According to police, two males clashed on the 100 block of Rideau Street near Nicholas Street at about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Police said after a brief verbal altercation, a 17-year-old male stabbed the 19-year-old man in the cheek before fleeing the scene.

The man stabbed is still in hospital. Police said his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

The youth was chased by a witness and captured by police a short time later.

The 17-year-old was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and three counts of breach of recognizance. He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He appeared in court Monday.
