A Gatineau, Que., bus driver could face disciplinary action after he was caught on video writing as he drove.

By Thursday evening, more than 7,500 people had watched the video on YouTube, where it was posted July 18.

The video shows a driver scribbling away on papers he has rested on a satchel on his lap, as cars, trucks and another bus stream by the windows. His hands rarely grip the steering wheel during the video's 57 seconds, and on several occasions his hands aren't on the wheel at all.

The cellphone video was recorded on one of Gatineau's busiest roads.

The transit service will not release the name of the driver but says he faces the possibility of discipline, including a suspension or a letter of reprimand.

Dominique Leclerc, speaking for Société de transport de l'Outaouais, said the driver's behaviour was unsafe and that the service would speak with him to get "his version."

The bus driver's union wouldn't comment on the video, but a union official told CBC News the recording might violate the driver's privacy rights.

While writing behind the wheel may be an unusual event, CBC News has learned Gatineau bus drivers have been issued 15 warnings for cellphone use behind the wheel since Quebec banned phone use while driving in April of 2008.
