A young child was rushed to hospital after being left in a sweltering, hot mini-van Saturday afternoon.

With the weather expected to remain hot for the next few days, officials are warning motorists not to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. (The Canadian Press)

And now, with the hot, humid weather expected to linger for another few days in the Ottawa area, officials are once again reminding motorists not to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

The warning comes after the infant was found locked inside a silver minivan on Saturday in the parking lot of a retail complex near 10th Line and Innes Roads.

Police smashed the window of the vehicle to rescue the child. They later located the child's parents nearby. Police say they will not be laying charges related to the incident.

The infant was reported in stable condition.

Ottawa Paramedics Superintendent Jason St. Pierre reminds people to never leave children or pets behind in a car, for any length of time.

"In this hot weather … a car with the windows up and off sitting in the sun or the shade, the temperatures inside rise very quickly and basically the car acts like an oven," he said.

In 2009 a Rockland woman pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessities of life in a similar incident.

Environment Canada is calling for hot, sticky weather until at least Sunday.
