Police in the eastern Ontario community of Cornwall have arrested four people suspected of being involved in an alleged human smuggling operation.

According to the Cornwall Regional Task Force, the suspects, who are all over 50, were attempting to ship three foreigners — a middle-aged Polish man and two middle-aged women from Slovakia — onto Cornwall Island, before smuggling them into the U.S.

Two of the alleged smugglers are from the Toronto area, while the other pair are from Cornwall and Akwesasne, police said. Their names have not been released.

Police say they expect to lay conspiracy charges and will release names once charges are filed.

Staff with the Canadian border agency are interviewing the foreigners.

The RCMP has said this is not a prostitution case.
