Patients at Bruyère Family Medicine Centre in Ottawa are being warned that some of their personal information may have been on two computers that were recently stolen.

Bruyère Continuing Care said in a statement that neither of the computers contained any medical information, but said data for patients seen at the clinic between 1971 and July 1, 2006 may be on the computers.

Personal data may include name, date of birth, street address, telephone number or health card number. The data breach could affect up to 60,000 patients.

Bruyère said there is no evidence the information found on the computers has been accessed or used inappropriately.

As a precautionary measure, however, Bruyère said patients from that time who suspect misuse are advised to obtain a copy of their credit report to verify the legitimacy of transactions.

The incident has been reported to the Ottawa Police and to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner/Ontario.
