The Ontario Labour Ministry is investigating after a construction worker was struck by a large pipe at the future location of the Ikea store in Ottawa.

Paramedics were called to the site at Pinecrest Road near Highway 417 at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officials said a pipe weighing more than 500 kilograms struck a 23-year-old man.

The blow fractured the man's lower leg. He also suffered a shoulder injury.

He was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Construction of the 398,000-square-foot store — expected to be the largest Ikea store in Canada — is scheduled for completion by next fall.
