Ottawa fire officials believe a gas leak caused a small explosion at bakery in the ByWard Market on Tuesday morning.

One man was injured when the oven at the Le Moulin De Provence bakery on ByWard Square suddenly blew up around 9:30 a.m. ET.

Fire department spokesperson Marc Messier said employees noticed a strange smell in the bakery when they showed up for work earlier in the morning.

Technicians were looking for the cause of the smell when the oven exploded, throwing a baker across the room.

He was treated for minor back injuries.

Fire crews extinguished the flames quickly, preventing major damages, said Ottawa fire spokesperson Marc Messier.

Fire officials say the fire was contained to the oven. No one else was hurt in the explosion.
