A moose that wandered into an Ottawa neighbourhood died Monday afternoon after suffering an abdominal injury jumping over a fence.

The moose lay down exhausted in front of a house off Chenier Way at Wilke Drive in the east end.

Police had been following the large animal from where it was first spotted on Trim Road and North Service Road, on the eastern edge of Ottawa, around noon.

The moose was later seen running through Fallingbrook Park and injuring itself as it jumped a fence.

Eric Burey, who lives in the Fallingbrook neighbourhood, said his wife spotted the moose walking down the street around 12:30 p.m.

"I took the camera and came and took a look at him and he was pretty sick," Burey said. "He was panting, he'd been through a lot of stress, he's overworked himself. That's why I think he ended up here.

"He made his way around the bend here and came here and lied down, he was just tired, just really, really exhausted. I think that's what did him in. He tried to get up about three, four times, he didn't have the energy, he grunted and finally … he let go."

Police placed a blue tarp over the animal after it died at about 4 p.m.

It was the fourth moose to die this year after wandering into a commercial or residential area of the National Capital Region.

In June, police shot and killed two moose in Ottawa and one in Rockland, about 30 kilometres east of Ottawa, after failing to corral the animals.
