The man charged in a September motor vehicle collision that killed a couple waiting for a bus in downtown Ottawa has been granted his release after posting a $50,000 bail.
Simon Banke, centre, leaves court Thursday. (CBC)Simon Banke, 20, has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and criminal negligence causing death in the deaths of Leo Paul Regnier, 36, and his wife Sherrianne, 35.
A justice of the peace approved Banke's release on Thursday after he posted a $10,000 surety and two relatives posted $20,000 bonds each.
Under the conditions of the release, Banke must stay at an Ottawa residence unless going to work, school or is in the company of his uncle or father.
He also cannot consume any alcohol or drugs, drive a motor vehicle or sit in the driver's seat of a motor vehicle and can have no contact with the Regnier family.
The Regniers were returning from an evening out on Sept. 16 and were waiting at a temporary bus stop on Albert Street east of Bank Street when witnesses said a sports car turned from Bank onto Albert, jumped the curb and struck the couple. Paul Regnier was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife died the following Monday in hospital.
The funeral for the parents of three girls — Isabella, 9, Jessica, 13, and Sarah, 15 — was held Monday in Cornwall, Ont.
Paul Regnier's co-workers at Transport Canada and family members said they have set up a fund for the couple's three daughters. Donations can be made at any Bank of Montreal branch.
