Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean encountered some rainy weather when she arrived in Regina on Monday.

With a trip to a university and a visit to a northern town, Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean wrapped up her two-day tour to Saskatchewan on Tuesday.

Jean's five-year term is coming to an end and it's expected the visit will be her last official one to the province.

She started her day Tuesday at the University of Saskatchewan, where she took a peek at the Canadian Light Source synchrotron, a massive device that uses powerful, highly pure beams of light to investigate matter on the molecular scale.

It was an exciting time for high school student Laura Newton, who got to chat with Jean.

"She was most interested in my experience, what I've done, where I want to go, who I've met, what an opportunity it is and how others can get involved," Newton said.

Scientist Michael Gaultois also had words of praise for Jean.

"She's a great person," Gaultois said. "She does a lot of stuff that I am aware of in terms of travelling and representing Canada."

An hour later, Jean was whisked over to Convocation Hall for a discussion about women's rights, where it was standing room only.

"We must not forget that women's rights, which we take for granted far too often these days, are a relatively new development in the history of our country and are therefore still quite fragile," she said.

The trip ended in La Ronge in the afternoon with a visit to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and a community gathering in her honour.

The day before, Jean was in Regina, where she planted a tree and attended a luncheon with Premier Brad Wall, among other events.

The Governor General's office would not say how much the trip to Saskatchewan would cost.

The federal government says it does budget for regional visits, while the Saskatchewan government also picks up part of the tab.

Jean next heads to Winnipeg for a two-day Manitoba tour that begins Wednesday.
