RCMP in the Yukon community of Mayo have recovered the body of Const. Michael Potvin, who went missing near the village's boat launch when a police boat capsized in the Stewart River on July 13.
The body of RCMP Const. Michael Potvin, 26, was found late Friday about 50 kilometres downriver from Mayo. (RCMP)Police said Potvin's body was discovered about 50 kilometres downstream from Mayo late Friday evening by two members on river patrol.
An autopsy is expected to be conducted later this week in Vancouver.
Finding the body is a relief to family and colleagues, Yukon RCMP spokesman Sgt. Don Rogers said.
"It's important to provide some closure to this sad and tragic event, not only for the family and loved ones of Const. Potvin, but for all the searchers, the volunteers and of course the extended RCMP family," he said.
Potvin, 26, who is married, joined the RCMP a year ago.
Rogers said a memorial service set for Wednesday in Ottawa, where Potvin grew up, will go ahead as planned. It will take place at Saint Patrick's Basilica, 281 Nepean St., beginning at 9:30 a.m.
A private funeral will be held by the family at a later date. Family members have asked the public to make donations to the school in Mayo, in lieu of flowers.
