Via Rail says it is prepared to continue offering basic services if employees go on strike at the end of the month.

In early June, more than 2,000 Canadian Auto Worker members, including Via ticket vendors and maintenance workers, voted in favour of a strike mandate if the union doesn't reach a new deal with management by 11:59 p.m. on June 27.

Negotiations between the CAW members and Via Rail are still ongoing.

In event of a strike, Via will only provide economy class service on all routes, the rail company said in a news release Tuesday.

Tickets will only be available online because Via Rail's telephone sales office will not be staffed.

Via Préférence points will still accumulate in the event of a strike, but points cannot be redeemed, the company said.

Exclusive benefits including online coupons won’t be valid during any work stoppage.
