The former deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada announced Friday he will be running for Ottawa city council in Capital Ward in this fall's municipal election.

David Chernushenko, who served as the Green Party's deputy leader until losing a leadership race to Elizabeth May in 2006, has previously run as a federal candidate in the riding of Ottawa Centre.

He placed fourth in both 2004 and 2006, with NDP candidates Ed Broadbent and Paul Dewar winning the riding both times.

It is the sustainability advocate's first attempt at a municipal seat. He said he intends to campaign for better public transit and safer cycling, more conservation efforts and providing sustainable and accessible housing.

Clive Doucet, the current councillor for Capital Ward, has not yet announced whether he will run for re-election in the upcoming vote.
